Outsourcing employee training and education is the easy option - you simply send employees out the door for the day and it's all taken care of for you. However, companies who move their training in-house can gain some important advantages, not only for the company, but also for the employees.


The potential to save money and time

In-house training can be achieved at a lower per-learner cost, but this does depend on a wide range of factors, including the number of employees that need training, the level of training required, and the type of equipment that's needed to train employees.

In small and medium companies, it's sometimes more practical to send individuals or small groups of employees for off-site training, but when larger groups of employees are involved, in-house events are typically less expensive to run. In-house training also saves the company from paying any travel and accommodation costs associated with off-site training. Depending on where training sessions are held, and the most convenient method of transport available, this can translate into significant savings - not to mention the opportunity cost of the travel time involved.


It can be more convenient to organise

When employees have a range of different responsibilities and demanding schedules it's not always an easy task to arrange convenient times for training to happen. When it's in-house, it's much easier to work about these problems, since there's no travel time required, and the ability to schedule training with little advance notice when necessary. When problems come up that need immediate attention, in-house training sessions can be scheduled and completed much more quickly than off-site sessions. It can also be useful to have employees in-house when training, since they're available in case emergencies arise and they need to be reached quickly.


Training sessions can be tailored to blend with culture

Many public training courses and e-learning courses are generic, but sometimes the best way to train employees in the subjects and skills that they need to know is to develop an in-house training course, and complete it on-site.  An additional advantage is being able to tap into the company culture and mood, and use it to advantage in developing training material that's stimulating as well as relevant.


The ability to use relevant teaching examples

Developing training material in-house also provides the opportunity to use real company examples that aren't just generic models only vaguely related to the work that employees are doing. It also ensures that employees are trained using resources that they'll be using when they work. This is a given if employees are being trained to use a new type of software or technical device, of course, but not necessarily when the training involves less specific situations and concepts.


It encourages teamwork

Gathering together a group of employees from different departments, and from multiple levels of the company, can be a great way to break down barriers and encourage people to engage with one another, and give people from different parts of the company a better understanding of other people's viewpoints and roles.

Without doubt, there are significant benefits to training in-house.
